Carl Kochan just completed his 10th year in professional baseball including the last six as the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for the 2012 and 2014 World Champion San Francisco Giants. He worked in the Giants minor league system for three years as the strength and conditioning coach for the Giants AAA affiliate in Fresno, CA before being promoted to his current position. Prior to joining the Giants, he spent a year in the Red Sox organization and two years in the Mariners organization. Carl worked in the fitness industry as a personal trainer, personal training coordinator, club manager and sports performance specialists before becoming involved in professional baseball.
A native of Chicago, IL Carl earned four letters in baseball at Streamwood High School in Streamwood, IL and was selected to play for the AAU Junior Olympic Baseball Team before accepting a full baseball scholarship at Kishwaukee College in Malta, IL in 1994. After two years at Kishwauee, he received a baseball scholarship to Southern Illinois University – Carbondale where he received the James J. Mundo Baseball Award for team leadership and earned a BS in Exercise Science in 1998.
Carl spent a two years as a volunteer assistant baseball coach at SIU before entering the fitness profession. He earned an MS degree in Human Performance from A. T. Still University in Gilbert, AZ in 2012 (ironically he took his last finial exam the day before game 1 of the 2012 World Series). He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and Registered Strength and Conditioning Coach (RSCC) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). He also holds CPT certifications from the NSCA and PES and CES certifications from the NASM. Carl is also certified by the USAW and SFMA and holds Levels 1 and 2 FMS certifications.
Carl resides in Mesa, AZ during the off-season with his wife of 13 years, Bethany with their two adopted four-year old fury kids (Raven and Jinx) from the Arizona Weimeriner Rescue. His philosophy of strength and conditioning in professional baseball is to work hard, be a teacher before being a coach and have fun.
Carl’s hobbies include spending time with his wife, Bethany, and their two dogs, Raven and Jinx. When not at the field Carl can be found at the dog park. The Kochans are involved with the Arizona Weimaraner Rescue. AZWR rescued their two dogs, and now they pay it forward by volunteering for various events and raising awareness and money to assist with vet bills and educate others about the weimaraner breed.
During his limited free time Carl enjoys studying World War II and listening to blues music. On plane trips he can be found watching movies, or reading about various aspects of WWII. If his headphones are on, there’s a good possibility Stevie Ray Vaughn is playing.
